Pullman – May 13-19, 2012 is designated as National Police Week. Each year communities across the United States come together to honor and remember those law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice, as well as the family members, friends and fellow officers they left behind.
This year, the names of 362 officers killed in the line of duty are being added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC. These 362 officers include 162 officers who were killed during 2011, plus 200 officers who died in previous years but whose stories of sacrifice had been lost to history until now. The names of all 362 fallen officers will be formally dedicated on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC, during the 24th Annual Candlelight Vigil on the evening of May 13, 2012. So that people across the country can experience this unique and powerful ceremony, the vigil will be webcast live over the Internet beginning at 5 PM (PDT) on May 13th. To register for this free online event, visit www.LawMemorial.org/webcast.
The fallen officers include two members of the law enforcement community in Washington State: Correctional Officer Jayme Lee Biendl of the Washington State Department of Corrections and Deputy Sheriff Shandon Wright of the Pierce County Sheriff's Department.
Pullman Police Chief Gary Jenkins commented, "Law enforcement officers in the City of Pullman, the State of Washington and throughout the nation put their lives on the line every day for their communities. We are fortunate that these brave men and women have chosen to dedicate their lives to the safety of others."
Pullman Police Officers will display blue ribbons on the antennas of their police cars to commemorate the fallen officers during National Police Week. Additional blue ribbons will be available to the public at the Pullman Police station.
